Project description:
Thank you for your interest in supporting a clean Rouge River by creating 6 beautiful rain gardens at Lowrey Middle School!
Rain gardens like Lowrey’s are hard-working gardens. Instead of rainwater going into our already overburdened stormwater system, rain gardens collect and absorb rain in place. The native plants we’re planting will create a home for songbirds and pollinators such as butterflies. Because of their deep roots, native plants also soak up and filter a lot of rainwater. Rain gardens can help reduce neighborhood flooding too!
Arrive early! We will start with an introduction to rain gardens and important safety instructions. Then, volunteers – along with staff from Friends of the Rouge and Sierra Club – will be planting the plants. Finally, using wheelbarrows, 5 gallon buckets, tarps, shovels, and rakes, we will spread mulch around the plants to protect them from weeds and drought.
Volunteers: Please dress for the weather. Wear closed-toed shoes – No sandals please. Refreshments and drinking water will be provided. All gloves and tools are provided.
Invite your friends and meet new friends at this wonderful rain garden planting event!
