Project description:

Thank you for your interest in supporting a clean Rouge River by creating 6 beautiful rain gardens at Lowrey Middle School!

Rain gardens like Lowrey’s are hard-working gardens. Instead of rainwater going into our already overburdened stormwater system, rain gardens collect and absorb rain in place. The native plants we’re planting will create a home for songbirds and pollinators such as butterflies. Because of their deep roots, native plants also soak up and filter a lot of rainwater. Rain gardens can help reduce neighborhood flooding too!

Arrive early! We will start with an introduction to rain gardens and important safety instructions. Then, volunteers – along with staff from Friends of the Rouge and Sierra Club – will be planting the plants. Finally, using wheelbarrows, 5 gallon buckets, tarps, shovels, and rakes, we will spread mulch around the plants to protect them from weeds and drought.

Volunteers:  Please dress for the weather. Wear closed-toed shoes – No sandals please. Refreshments and drinking water will be provided. All gloves and tools are provided.

Invite your friends and meet new friends at this wonderful rain garden planting event!

Workday location:  Lowrey Middle School – 6601 Jonathon St, Dearborn, MI 48126  Please carpool if you can.

Accessibility & Difficulty: This event will involve walking, sometimes on uneven terrain. The activities will include light effort (standing, walking, some bending, lifting 5-10 pounds) or moderate effort (bending, kneeling, digging, lifting 10-15 pounds).

UPDATE: Portable restroom WILL be available onsite.

What accommodations do you need to fully participate? If you have questions or accessibility-related needs, please email Site Coordinator, Rosina Newton – RNewton@therouge.org

Thank you for your dedication to a clean Rouge River!
