This Rouge Rescue, join Friends of the Rouge and Plymouth Township to install a rain garden! The Rouge’s biggest problem is too much dirty water runoff during big storms. Rain gardens are gardens with a job to do: soaking up the rain. The Plymouth Township rain garden will soak up as much as 6,700 gallons of stormwater each time it rains, helping to reduce flooding for neighbors who live downstream and improving the health of Tonquish Creek. Enjoy this hands-on opportunity to learn how to install a rain garden at your own home! Altogether, our homes add up to about 50% of the land area that drains to the Rouge, so finding ways to soak up the rain at home is key to solving problems with flooding and pollution. Pitch in at Plymouth Township Park and find out how you can make rain gardens—and clean water!—part of your life.

Work tasks for the day will include:
Smoothing the garden
Spreading mulch
Planting the rain garden

This project has been funded in part through the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) Nonpoint Source Program by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
