You are invited to join with Friends of the Rouge and other Friend-ly people for two ongoing opportunities.
Volunteers, you can give some love to newly-planted native tree seedlings along the Lower Rouge River by installing coconut fiber weed mats. Or, perhaps you’d love to do good and feel great in 1 of the 25 rain gardens at the Plymouth Arts & Rec Complex in Plymouth? Friends of the Rouge and Outdoor Afro Upcoming Paddle Trip!
Join Friends of the Rouge and Outdoor Afro for an unforgettable paddle trip on the Rouge River! The trip will be on Saturday, July 15, 2023 from 9am – 12pm. The Lower Rouge River Water Trail launch location will be announced in the weeks before the paddle trip. Motor City Canoe and Kayak will provide livery and shuttle services. If you are bringing your own boat, there is a $10 shuttle fee. It is $40 to rent a kayak or canoe.
Ready to get your students involved in river education and streamside water testing? Friends of the Rouge’s Rouge Education Project is offering four days of workshops for educators this August 4-9. Use the link below for more information and to register. These trainings are also open to volunteers who want to help schools with this project. Deadline to register is July 30.
2023 Spring Bug Hunt Report and Fall Bug Hunt Registration
The 2023 Spring Bug Hunt was a success thanks to wonderful volunteers like you! Volunteers make monitoring events possible. Together, 27 sites were sampled with 84 volunteers.
On the Lower Branch, twelve sites were sampled and one had an EXCELLENT Stream Quality Index (SQI) score, three were GOOD, and eight were FAIR, averaging out to a rating of 30 or FAIR. On the Main Branch, eight sites were sampled and four had GOOD SQI scores, three were FAIR, and one was POOR, averaging 33 or FAIR. On the Middle Branch, sixteen sites were sampled and one site had an EXCELLENT SQI score, four were GOOD, eight were FAIR, and three were POOR, averaging 30 or FAIR. On the Upper Branch, five sites were sampled and one had a GOOD SQI score, three were FAIR, and one was POOR, averaging 24 or FAIR.

Thank you for supporting the cleaning and opening of logjams on the Lower Rouge River Water Trail! This past Saturday over 20 volunteers opened four logjams and cleared low hanging branches in preparation for the Outdoor Afro Paddle trip on this route coming up this Saturday, July 15. Thank you for making paddling the Lower Rouge a reality!
