Project description:

Thank you for your interest in supporting a clean Rouge River! By participating in this event, volunteers will be creating a beautiful space by planting this special, hard-working rain garden!

Rain gardens like LaNita’s collect and store excess rainwater. The native plants we will be planting will increase biodiversity in the community – creating a home for pollinators such as butterflies. Because of their deep roots, native plants also soak up and filter excess rainwater, reducing flooding!

LaNita’s Pocket Park was brought to life to memorialize LaNita, the cornerstone of her community and family. This memorial park will provide a beautiful space for visiting pollinators and people, and now will help reduce flooding too.

This event is led by Carolyn and My Community Speaks. It’s an event for everyone who is interested in contributing to this beautiful park and in supporting a healthier Rouge River community.

Carolyn of My Community Speaks and Dallas of Friends of the Rouge will start with a tour, walking the site and showing the design drawings of what is to come. Then, plants will be set in place according to Dallas’ planting design. Volunteers will be planting the plants. Finally, using wheelbarrows, 5 gallon buckets, shovels, and rakes, mulch will be spread around the plants to protect them from weeds and drought.

Invite your friends and come meet new friends at this wonderful event!

Workday location:  LaNita’s Pocket Park – 5651 Hartford Street, Detroit, MI, 48210
