Eight species of frogs and toads have been confirmed in the watershed. The headwaters of the Rouge, where the streams are smaller and wetlands more numerous generally have more species than the downstream areas.
In 2014, an assessment of the data collected from 1998-2014 was conducted in relation to the Rouge River Area of Concern and the projects necessary to delist the watershed for Habitat-Related Beneficial Use Impairments. The assessment pinpointed area in need of projects and more surveys.
